Indie hacking communities

The named home is Indie Hackers. Hacker News is where the name launched. Reddit has looser rooms. MicroConf and smaller paid logs trade size for a filter. Most of these rooms are other builders. That is useful, and it is a bad place to pretend you found your customer.

Communities in this scene are peers. A few of them are also customers, when the product is for builders. The mistake is to treat “I joined the community” as distribution to the world. The rooms below are where indie hacking talks to itself. Pick them for that job. Pick a different room when the buyer is someone else.

No community paid to be listed. Member counts are omitted on purpose. They move, and they are a bad proxy for whether a thread will help.

Indie Hackers

Indie Hackers is the named home. Courtland Allen launched it in August 2016 so people could learn from profitable projects, not only from launch posts. Stripe owned it for years. In April 2023 Allen and his brother Channing said they were running it again as a standalone business. The about page is still the definition this site uses for who counts.

Use it to read how a product actually charged. The interview archive is the asset. The feed, like any feed, rewards milestones. Posting a link into a milestone culture and hoping for customers is the weak use. Reading a ten-year-old interview about pricing is the strong use.

Hacker News

Hacker News is not an indie hacking club. It is the square where Allen posted the site on 11 August 2016, and where “is indie SaaS dying?” still shows up as an Ask HN. The commenters are engineers and founders with a low tolerance for costume. A Show HN can bring harsh, useful traffic. It can also bring nothing. It is a public room with norms, not a support group. The timeline starts the name here and the practice earlier.

Reddit

r/indiehackers is the loose public version of the identity: feedback, first users, MVPs, complaints. r/SaaS and r/SideProject overlap and are not the same room. Self-promotion rules tighten whenever a subreddit gets large enough to be worth spamming. Write a specific result if you post. A link with no lesson gets removed or ignored, and it should.

Reddit is a bad place to survey “the market.” It is a fine place to see what other builders are anxious about this month. Anxiety is not demand.

MicroConf

MicroConf is a conference and a network for bootstrapped and mostly bootstrapped SaaS, associated with Rob Walling. MicroConf Connect is the paid, vetted online room: fewer strangers, a no-pitch rule they state in public, founders at different revenue stages. It costs money and it asks who you are. That filter is the product. It is closer to “SaaS operator” than to “I shipped a wrapper yesterday.” If that is your company, the hallway track is the point of the events. If you are pre-product, read the public talks before you pay for a peer group you cannot use yet.

Smaller logs, and the Discord problem

WIP is a long-running paid log of what people shipped. The idea matches the useful core of build in public: a cadence, not a performance. Paid is the filter. Filters decay if the owner stops caring. Look at the current room before you treat any paragraph, including this one, as a review of this month’s culture.

Large free Discords and Slacks fill with launches. Smaller ones tied to a tool you already use — a host, a database, a framework — often have better technical conversation, because the shared object is the tool, not the act of being a founder. This page will not rank those servers. They change faster than a static list should pretend.

Indie Worldwide and similar “founders in a chat” products come and go as recommendations in Reddit threads. A recommendation thread is not due diligence. If you join, notice in the first week whether people discuss customers or trade feedback-for-feedback. The second one is a mirror.

X is a feed

X is where build-in-public became a mass habit, and where bidding and revenue screenshots live now. It is not a community with a shared archive or a host. It is a ranking system. Follow specific people from the short list if you want a record. Following a hashtag is how you drown in the saturated shelf described on oversaturation.

What a community will not do

It will not make a product true. It will not supply a buyer who is not in the room. An audience of peers can look like traction. Peers are a gift when you need a second pair of eyes on a charge flow. They are a trap when you count them as the market.

Use Indie Hackers to read. Use Hacker News to be disagreed with. Use a paid room only when the filter is the thing you are buying. Find the buyer’s community somewhere else, and do not be surprised when it does not call itself indie hacking.

FAQ

What are the main indie hacking communities?

Indie Hackers is the one that matches the name. Hacker News is the older public square where the site launched. r/indiehackers and adjacent subreddits are looser. MicroConf is a conference and a vetted network for bootstrapped SaaS. Smaller paid communities trade spam for a fee.

Are Discord servers worth joining?

Some stay useful because they are small, paid, or tied to a tool you actually use. Large free servers fill with links. This page does not rank Discords it cannot vouch for month to month.

Can you find customers in these communities?

You can find customers who are themselves builders. If the buyer is outside that group, these rooms are for peers and morale, not for the sale. Say which one you are using the room for.
